If you wish to enter the UK as a spouse or another family member, you must first apply for entry
clearance. You must be able to meet the financial, accommodation and English requirements.
To enter the UK with a spouse/marriage visa you must satisfy the following requirements:-
- You and your spouse must be 18 years old or over.
- You must have met each other and be legally married.
- You must intend to live together permanently.
- Although permitted to work, you must be able to financially maintain yourself and
any dependents without claiming public funds.
- Your sponsoring partner must earn more than £18,600 per year or have enough
savings to be able to sponsor you. The minimum financial requirement is higher if
also sponsoring dependant non-British children.
- There must be suitable accommodation for you, your spouse and any dependants without
overcrowding.
- You must obtain an English language qualification in Speaking and Listening at Level
A1 or above from an approved test provider.
Spouse visas are granted for 33 months after which an extension must be applied for. Upon
completion of 5 years, spouses are eligble to apply for permanent residence.
To extend a spouse visa under the 5 year route in the UK, you and your sponsor must continue
to satisfy all of the above requirements. In addition however, your income can be added to
your sponsor's in order to meet the financial requirement. You are also required to obtain a
Level A2 English qualification from an approved test provider. Please contact us if you still wish to remain
in the UK as a spouse but are unable to satisfy any of the above requirements.
To apply for Indefinite Leave to remain as a spouse, you must satisfy all of the above
requirements and in addition, you must pass the Life in the UK Test.
